In the 1920s the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta dreamt of creating a ’thoroughbred’ wine, one that mimicked one of the great wines of Bordeaux. Mario Incisa found that the Tuscan terrain and Graves in Bordeaux shared similar characteristics, and he made the innovative and perhaps even radical decision to plan Cabernet Sauvignon in Tuscany, instead of Sangiovese. The wine even took the name Sassicaia, or ’stony ground’, again paying respect to the gravely soils of the Left Bank of Bordeaux. For the first few years Sasssicaia remained a private affair. Eventually it was discovered that the wine aged well and improved considerably after some time in the cellar, and this encouraged experimentation until the first commercial release in 1968. This is a wine that disrupted Italian tradition and created a new world-class genre: the Super Tuscans.
