About the course

An advanced level qualification for professionals working in the wine industry and for wine enthusiasts. For individuals seeking to delve deeper into the world of wines, this qualification provides a detailed understanding of grape growing and wine making. Upon completion you will be able to assess wines accurately, and use your understanding to confidently explain wine style and quality. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

What you’ll learn

Unit 1

  • The key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, winemaking, maturation and bottling.
  • How these key factors influence the key characteristics of the principal
    • still wines of the world
    • sparkling wines of the world
    • fortified wines of the world
  • How to apply your understanding to explain wine style and quality.

Unit 2

  • How to taste wines, describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT).

Course delivery

The course consists of nine-modules. Students are given nine weeks to complete the course, so should aim to complete one module per week. A recommendation of ten hours study per week is given to cover the online activities and read the relevant chapters in the textbook. There are no fixed times to log-on as there is no “live” delivery of content. Students can therefore complete their learning at times that suit them.

Students are advised to taste a range of wines during their studies and can post their tasting notes in the Online Classroom for review by the educator. All the required wines for the course can be found in the specification. Florida Wine Academy offers an optional tasting kit with this online course.

Students will have access to the online classroom and the corresponding course materials for one year from the course start date.

Assessment

Unit 1 is assessed by a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions and a short-written answer paper. Unit 2 is assessed by a blind tasting of two wines. All exams take place in person, in Miami. It is not possible to sit this exam online. Kindly note that we run this exam on set dates throughout the year, and there may be a period of time in-between finishing your online course and the next available exam date. Upcoming dates will be provided upon course registration.

The exam must take place after the advertised finish date of the course and within one year after the course start date. After one year, you will have to purchase and re-take the entire course before you can sit the exam.

Printed Materials

All students will be sent printed study materials to the mailing address provided upon course registration and will receive tracking information when the materials have been shipped. We recommend adding the email address ‘info@floridawineacademy.com’ to your safe sender list, in order to prevent any relevant communication going to spam. It is the responsibility of the student to liaise with USPS regarding any issue relating to the delivery of these materials. Florida Wine Academy is unable to replace printed study materials free of charge in the case that an issue arises with delivery. Kindly note that in the situation where a student wishes to cancel their course registration, the cost of the printed study materials is non-refundable.

Entry Requirements

You must hold the WSET Level 2 in Wines qualification prior to registering for this course. We kindly ask that, if you did not take WSET Level 2 in Wines course with Florida Wine Academy, you send proof of your qualification upon registration (i.e., a copy of your certificate). What happens after course registration

  1. Immediately: You will receive an automated email order confirmation after registering for a course.
  2. Within two business days of your order: Florida Wine Academy will ship the WSET Level 3 in Wines study pack, containing a textbook and a workbook, to the mailing address provided upon registration. You will receive a tracking number once this has shipped.
  3. Seven working days prior to the course start date: Florida Wine Academy will register you with WSET for the online course dates selected; you will then receive an email with further information regarding the online course.

The price includes the online WSET Level 3 in Wines study pack, online tuition, remote invigilation exam, and the certificate and lapel pin (upon successful completion of the examination).
