WSET Level 1 Award in Wines

A basic level introduction to wine, for those who want to start a career in the wine business or for individuals new to the study of wine. In this class, we taste about nine wines and learn about major grape varieties, wine regions, storage, and the service of wine. We also do an interesting food and wine pairing.

Learning Objectives

  • The main types and styles of wine available
  • Common wine grapes varieties and their characteristics
  • How to store and serve wine
  • Basic principles of food and wine pairing
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)
  • Issues related to the safe consumption of wine

Assessment

Assessment is by a closed-book exam of 30 multiple-choice questions to be completed within 45 minutes. A total mark of 70% is required to achieve a pass. All students who pass will be issued with a certificate and will receive a lapel pin.

Entry Requirements

You must be at least 21 years of age to attend the course and to participate in any alcohol tasting.

Course Delivery

Courses are available in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Class Format

Saturdays from 9 am to 5 pm, with a one-hour break for lunch or evening classes from 6 pm to 8.30 pm.

WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits

This course is an intermediate level qualification, designed for those employed in the wine business, wanting to further their career in the beverage industry or for wine and spirits enthusiasts seeking to deepen their knowledge. In this class, we taste about 50 wines and 4 spirits.

Learning Objectives

  • The major grape varieties and wine regions in the world
  • Wine styles, classification and labeling
  • Basic overview of spirits and liqueurs
  • The production of sparkling, sweet and fortified wine
  • Basic principles of food and wine pairing
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)
  • Issues related to the safe consumption of wine

Assessment

Assessment is by a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions to be completed within 60 minutes. A total mark of 55% is required to achieve a pass. All students who pass will be issued with a certificate and will receive a lapel pin.

You must be at least 21 years of age to attend the course and to participate in any alcohol tasting.

Course Delivery

This qualification requires a minimum of 16 hours of in-class instruction and at least 12 hours of outside study. This course is available in English and Spanish.

Class Format

Weeknights from 6 pm to 8.30 pm, for 2.5 weeks, or intensive courses on weekends, usually Saturday/Sunday. Please check our website for more information.

WSET Level 3 Award in Wines

This is an advanced level qualification, for those working in the wine industry or for wine enthusiasts seeking a vast knowledge of wine. This qualification provides a thorough understanding of the various factors affecting wine style, quality, and price of wines. We taste more than 80 wines in this course.

Learning Objectives

  • The key factors in the production of the principal wines of the world and describe how these influence wine style, quality, and price
  • The key factors in the production of sparkling wines and fortified wines
  • Be able to provide information and advice to customers and staff about wine
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

Assessment

Assessment is by a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions and a paper of short written answers. There is also a blind tasting of two wines. The examination paper is to be completed within 1 hour and 45 minutes. The practical-tasting examination is to be completed within 30 minutes. A minimum mark of 55% in each part is required to achieve a pass. All students who pass will be issued with a certificate and will receive a lapel pin.

Entry Requirements

You must be at least 21 years of age to attend the course and to participate in any alcohol tasting. It is recommended that you hold the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits or can demonstrate the equivalent level of knowledge.

Course Delivery

This qualification has a minimum requirement of 84 hours of study time, including 30 hours of classroom and at least 54 hours of home study. Available in English and Spanish.

Class Format

Intensive course: Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. Saturday courses are five Saturdays from 9 am to 5 pm, including a lunch break.

A beginner level introduction to spirits for those starting a career in the industry or pursuing an interest in spirits.

For individuals new to the subject, this qualification offers a hands-on introduction to the world of spirits. You’ll explore the main styles and types of spirits through sight, smell, and taste to develop an understanding of the key factors affecting flavours and aromas. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.
